Monetizing My Mom Blog

January 29, 2009 by Gina Badalaty

It’s been a crazy few months, and I apologize for not blogging here in so long! Some situations have arisen that have encouraged me to once again refocus my time and effort into monetizing my mom blog, so I’d like to share with you what I’ve done, and what I’m planning on doing.

Redesign
My blog needed an upgrade, and the template I had customized last time was not compatible with the required WordPress upgrade, so I tried a new template and customized that. If you look at my blog, you’ll notice the layout is different. That’s intentional. I’m hoping that this layout will allow me to place more space for advertising.

Text-Link-Ads
This system allows people to buy link ads on your website, and you earn a percentage of the order. It’s very safe and quickly allows you to profit. I’ll be testing it on Mom Blog in several ways to see how it does.

Twitter
I’m running a heavy campaign on Twitter for Mom Blog, and also for the other 3 blogs I write (besides here!). Within 3 ½ months of active participation on Twitter, I have garnered over 800 followers. It’s actually quite fun, and easy to interact when you have downtime. I recommend Twitter to anyone who has a blog!

Amazon Best Sellers
I read about trying this on Problogging.net: put up the latest bestsellers that are relevant to your audience from Amazon, and link your affiliate account. I’ll see if this gets any action. It’s on the homepage under “Best Selling Baby and Parenting Books” – and the new template layout has some nice spacing for it. I have to jazz up the appearance a bit more, so I’ll work on that.

I’m going to give these initiatives a little time and see what happens. I’m still ranking very well on Google, but I after a brief top 5 appearance, I fell back to the top of page 2 on Yahoo! so I’ll have to figure that out.

Getting this blog more profitable is critical for my family right now, so I’ll track my progress (just installed Google Analytics) on a weekly basis and report how the strategies above are performing. Until next time, good luck monetizing your blog!
